Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. I’m just a mom sharing with another mom the home remedy that helped clear up my son’s pink eye. Please consult your physician for more information!
It felt like the plague of nastiness had entered our house when my 4 year old got pink eye. I understand that statement sounds a bit dramatic but you never think your child will get pink eye. Sadly, he did and although I have nothing against doctors I knew there had to be a way to naturally treat his pink eye.
And there was! After consistently using this essential oil treatment for one day I saw major improvement in the amount of discharge coming from his eyes. I continued for a few more days and it cleared up!
Pink Eye Symptoms
How did I know my son had pink eye?
At first I noticed that the whites of his eyes looked pink/red. Then later that day I noticed yellow-green discharge oozing from his eyes.
Other symptoms that are possible with pink eye are pain/burning, tearing, and swelling.
Natural Pink Eye Treatment
When using essential oils NEVER put them in your eyes!
1 drop Lavender essential oil*
1 drop Tea Tree essential oil*
1-2 tablespoons Fractionated Coconut Oil (or other carrier oil such as olive or almond)
- Mix oils together in a small bowl or the palm of your hand.
- With clean hands, rub the oils on the cheekbone under the eye making sure not to get any in the eye.
- Wash your hands thoroughly to prevent contamination.
- Repeat every 1-2 hours.
If you accidentally get essential oils in the eye put the carrier oil in or around the eye to dilute the essential oil. NEVER USE WATER to get essential oils out of the eye…this will only make it worse.
*Note on Essential Oils
Keep in mind that not all essential oils are created equal. I use the doTerra brand because I know they are safe. Please check the brand you are using to make sure they are therapeutic grade, especially if you’re purchasing them off of the shelf in the store.
Is It Contagious?
Pink eye is most definitely contagious. Every time I rubbed the essential oils on my son’s cheekbones, or even when my hands were close to his face, I thoroughly washed my hands.
I also used a new tissue each time I wiped the discharge from his eyes. (Or went from wiping one eye to the other.)
You can’t be too safe so I encourage you to constantly wash your hands.
