Today I’m sharing my grandma Maxine’s No-Bake Cookies recipe! She was a wonderful cook and I’m always thrilled to share her recipes with you!
Peanut butter paired with chocolate is definitely a winner in my book, and that’s what always makes these cookies a big hit. You better believe I had to try some of the cookie “dough” before it hardened. Yummo! What can I say – I couldn’t wait!
(It took a while for the cookies to harden. I ended up putting them in the refrigerator to finish up the process, and it worked like a charm!)
Maxine’s No-Bake Cookies
1/2 cup Butter
1/4 cup Cocoa
2 cups Sugar
1/2 cup Milk
Pinch of Salt
1 teaspoon Vanilla
1 cup Peanut Butter
3 cups Oatmeal
- In a stockpot on medium-high heat, combine the butter, cocoa, sugar milk and salt. Bring to a rolling boil and boil for one minute.
- Add in the vanilla and peanut butter and mix together. Once peanut butter has melted, mix in the oatmeal.
- Spoon onto wax paper and let cool. (I used a medium scoop.)
I’m so happy to see a recipe for these with butter! The one my mom has calls for margarine (YUCK). I made the mistake of using natural peanut butter one time and they never firmed up so I’ve been hesitant to try any other changes.
My grandma cooked with ingredients like margarine too! :)
I hope you enjoy these yummy cookies, Sara!
I have the same recipe but mine calls for only 4 T peanut butter. I’ve never had problem with them not hardening. Just a suggestion. ☺️
Thank you for the tip, Donna!
Hi Karen! You’ll want to use baking cocoa with recipes (unless it states otherwise, of course). Baking cocoa (cocoa powder) is found in the baking aisle at the grocery store with the sugars, flours, etc.
Just in case you haven’t used it before, here’s a pic of what the Hershey brand looks like. Of course, you can use whichever brand you’d like! http://www.hersheys.com/pure-products/details.aspx?id=4809&name=HERSHEYS-Cocoa-Natural-Unsweetened&f=11

I grew up with my mom making these, also, and I’m now a g-grand mom. They are also delicious made without the cocoa for those who don’t like chocolate(!) or just for a different flavor. I don’t make these very often anymore because I can’t leave them alone!
I can’t leave them alone either, Jean!
They’re like eating potato chips, you can’t eat just one. :O)

What kind of oatmeal, there are so many kinds.old fashion, 3min.,1 min quick cook?
Heidi, I’ve used both the 1 minute and 3 minute oats. Enjoy!
I only use about 1/3 of a cup of oatmeal and 2 to 3 cups of coconut and they are so yummy yummy … Also I cook mine for 2 minutes exactly
I bet the coconut gives it great flavor! Thanks for sharing, Gean!
Hi Tshanina,
If you want a thicker cookie, could you add coconut? Or how would I make it thicker? I have celiac disease and want a great tasting cookie and found your recipe and want to try it…
I’ve never tried adding coconut, but it’d definitely be worth a shot! :o)
Please let us know how it turns out if you try it with the coconut, Lisa.
I also heard you can put them in a pan, sprayed with pam, and after they are cooled cut into squares.
That’s a great idea, Erin. Thanks for sharing!

I made Maxine’s No Bake cookies. And OMG!!! very velvety chocolate cookies. They do take a bit to harden, but they’re also delicious semi-soft. Your chocolate craving will disappear!
I’m so glad to hear this, Margie! My grandma would be proud!
