Big things happen when we’re intentional with our finances! Do you believe that? Well, I sure do!

Over the years I’ve had a ton of conversations with people about their finances. It’s so fun to encourage and help them on their journey, and I’m always honored when someone asks for my help or advice. (I guess they figure that a girl who lives debt free and has been on a budget since her teen years may know a few things about it.)

I wish I could say these financial conversations are all rainbows and roses, but they’re not. There are times when I walk away frustrated. I’m amazed at how many people feel like a budget is a bad word. I’ve heard every excuse in the book: I don’t have time, I won’t be able to do the things that I want to do, I don’t have any money, and on and on they go.

For many, it’s easier to be in denial than it is to take responsibility for their finances. They don’t want to try a budget because they have no clue where they’re spending their hard-earned money. They’re blowing their money and have absolutely nothing to show for it.

Maybe you’re exactly like the stories above and have made every excuse in the book. Well, it’s high time for you to stop making excuses and to just start. What could it hurt? Let me ask that again. What could it hurt?

Don’t get me wrong because I’m not trying to beat you up or drag you down. My desire is to help you live an abundant life and I know how important finances are in doing just that.

If you don’t believe me, then take a look at my top three reasons of why you need to start a budget!

1. Freedom

Many people laugh at the idea of a budget giving financial freedom because they feel like it’s a straight jacket.

Yes, budgeting takes hard work and determination but it also gives freedom!

Freedom in knowing exactly where every penny you earn is being spent.

Freedom when you finally pay off that last bill.

Freedom when you go from having a few extra dollars in your savings account to a couple thousand.

Freedom when an emergency comes up (and they will) and you don’t have to charge it on your credit card because you’ve saved for it.

Freedom to give because you lived like no one else.

The list could go on and on but I think you get the idea of how being on a budget gives freedom.

2. Flexibility

The idea of budgeting is simply telling your money exactly where it’s going or how it’s going to be spent. You are the one in charge of and responsible for your finances, not anyone else. So you have the flexibility to spend your money where you want to.

When you first start a budget it’s highly likely that you won’t have a lot of wiggle room for the extras like eating out or other fun things but as you’re consistent with budgeting each and every month you’ll be amazed at how quickly your money frees itself up. You’ll learn, make changes, pay off bills and will find more room in your budget which gives you flexibility.

 3. A Future

What hopes and dreams do you have?  If you continue on the current financial path that you’re on will you be able to make those dreams a reality?

Whether you need to clean up some debt that’s been hanging around for years or just want to get your financial life in order, budgeting can give you hope for the future.

Do you dream of paying cash for a car or taking your family on a Disney vacation. Well, my friend, you’re the only thing that’s keeping you from your dreams.

The decision of whether or not to start a budget is totally up to you – I can’t do it for you. If you feel stuck or like there’s no way out of your current financial situation I challenge you to start a budget and try it for 6 months. I triple dog dare you!

I asked this question at the beginning but I’m going to ask you again. What could it hurt? I’m not a betting girl, but if I was I would bet that starting a budget just might change your life!

Why not start a budget? What’s holding you back?
