You have tons of chicken recipes but now you just need to find a fabulous price on chicken. I’m excited to share how we save money on chicken!
Warning: There are images of raw chicken in this post. So just be aware if the site of raw meat doesn’t bode well with your tummy.
A few months ago my sister called. She had found boneless, skinless chicken breasts through Zaycon at $1.69 a pound and asked if I wanted in on the deal. These aren’t just any chicken breasts but 100% natural with no added hormones. You better believe I said yes!
She let me know that the minimum order was 40 lbs. Now I realize that’s a lot of chicken, but meat deals are few and far between so I was in! Go big or go home, right?
Our order arrived and she went to pick it up. To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, or how it would be packaged. But, as you can see they boxed it up nicely (and the box was clean of any chicken goo!)
Update: I picked up our most recent order and it was a breeze. I pulled up in my car, gave them my name, and pulled forward to the refrigerated truck. The workers loaded the chicken into my car and I didn’t have to lift a finger! It was so easy and I was thoroughly impressed at how fast the entire process took!
Inside the box was a big sealed bag with four individual bags of chicken inside the sealed bag. (I know, it looks rather nasty but this is exactly what I found when I opened the box!)
I put each individual bag of chicken in a colander so that the extra juices would drain off. (I recommend that you use a steel colander so that you don’t contaminate any other foods that you use in the colander later.)
They came as butterflied chicken breasts. Aren’t they ginormous?!? I put on my butcher’s hat and went to work separating the pieces and cutting them into smaller portions. Trent’s a meat guy but I think even these pieces would be way too big!
I cut each bag up one at a time. (The chicken in the picture above is one bag or 1/4th of the box of chicken!)
I then placed the individual pieces in freezer bags. All in all I had 12 gallon size freezer bags full of chicken.
This chicken lasts us quite a few months, usually right in time for my next Zaycon order!
Is it worth the extra work to save money on chicken?
It may take a little extra work than just going to the store and picking up a package of chicken breasts but I definitely think it’s worth it. Plus it’s hard to find natural and hormone free chicken at a great price. So, in my opinion, yes, it’s definitely worth it!
Zaycon also offers pork, beef and fish so you can save money on other meat purchases too!
What are you waiting for? Head on over to Zaycon’s website and see if there’s a pick up location near you. If there is go ahead and sign up to receive their emails and you’ll learn when/what’s on sale!
And there you have it, my fabulous way to save money on chicken. You’re welcome!
