Asking yourself whether your life really has purpose is a valid question. In fact, it’s one that I’ve asked myself quite often.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Psalm 139:13, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Let’s read that again because I’m not sure that we truly grasped what the verse says, “you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

Have you ever watched someone knit? They don’t just throw the scarf or blanket together. It takes tons of time and effort. The knitter puts heart and soul into their pieces. Just think about it for a minute. If God knit us together, He put tons of thought into who you, and little ole’ me, were going to be. He created us just the way He wanted us, with a purpose for this life.

John Ortberg says it best in his book The Me I Want to Bethe me i want to be by john ortberg – “You are not your handiwork; your life is not your project. Your life is God’s project. God thought you up, and He knows what you were intended to be.” If that doesn’t get your heart stirring I don’t know what will!

Knowing that God has a purpose for our lives doesn’t mean that we’re going to wake up one day and have it all together with “the perfect life.” We’ll still have hard days and trials, but when those days come we can remember that God knows what He’s up to and He has a purpose in mind!

Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” When life feels like it’s falling apart we can remember that He has a purpose and plan!

To be honest, some days it doesn’t feel like God has the best plan for my life. But I have to choose joy and remember that He sees the bigger picture (5, 10 even 20 years into my future)! John Ortberg goes on to say, “God is at work every moment to help you become His best version of you.” I love that! God isn’t going to rest until we’re who He’s created us to be! He’s not giving up on us and we shouldn’t either!

So to answer my original question. Yes, our lives do have purpose! Now that’s something to smile about!
