Learning how to spend time with God when you’re busy can feel overwhelming—especially when every season of life already feels full.
You may want to slow down, open your Bible, and sit quietly with the Lord… but the reality of your days doesn’t always make that easy. And when time slips by, guilt often creeps in right behind it.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
There have been seasons in my own life when spending time with God felt incredibly hard. When my son was an infant and I was an exhausted mom battling postpartum depression, even the thought of quiet time felt overwhelming. Later, while working from home, there were days I dove straight into work and didn’t realize until the end of the day that I hadn’t picked up my Bible at all.
If you’ve ever felt discouraged or guilty about how your time with God looks right now, I want you to hear this first:
God is not disappointed in you.
Time with God doesn’t have to look the same in every season.
One of the biggest misconceptions we carry is that time with God has to look a certain way to “count.”
- Having a quiet house.
- Reading a full chapter from the Bible.
- Having perfectly focused prayer.
But life doesn’t stay the same—and neither do our rhythms.
Busy seasons don’t mean you’re spiritually failing. They mean you’re human.
God meets us in real life, not ideal schedules.
Scripture reminds us, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)
This verse doesn’t come with a checklist or a time requirement—just an invitation.
Spending time with God is about awareness, not perfection.
Instead of asking, “Did I do enough?”
A better question might be, “Was I aware of God’s presence today?”
I’m learning that prayer doesn’t have to be limited to one quiet moment in the morning. On busy days, I try to pray throughout the day and simply talk to God—while working, walking, or doing everyday tasks.
Time with God can look like:
- Whispering a prayer under your breath.
- Acknowledging Him in the middle of your day.
- Inviting Him into what you’re already doing.
Faith isn’t always about carving out more time—it’s about inviting God into the time you already have.

5 Simple ways to spend time with God when you’re busy.
If your days feel full and quiet time feels hard, here are a few gentle, realistic ways to stay connected—without pressure.
1. Pray throughout the day.
Prayer doesn’t have to be formal or long. Sometimes it’s just talking to God as you go:
- “Lord, help me with this.”
- “Thank You for this moment.”
- “I need You right now.”
Those prayers matter.
2. Read one verse instead of a full chapter.
One verse read slowly and thoughtfully can be more meaningful than rushing through an entire chapter. Let God’s Word meet you where you are.
3. Use a short devotional when Bible reading feels hard.
There are seasons when focusing on Scripture feels difficult—and that’s okay.
Devotionals have absolutely helped me stay connected when reading the Bible is hard. It’s amazing how a simple devotional can change the course of my day or point out something in Scripture I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.

4. Write one honest sentence to God.
It doesn’t have to be long or eloquent.
It’s amazing how much my prayer life was strengthened when I started using a prayer journal. Writing my prayers down helped me slow down and stay focused in a way I hadn’t before.

5. Let listening count.
Listening to Scripture or worship music while doing everyday tasks still counts as time with God. It’s another way to let His truth fill your heart.
When you miss a day (or many).
This is where guilt often speaks the loudest—but it doesn’t speak the truth.
It’s incredibly freeing when you truly realize the grace God gives you when you miss days. Hold onto that truth and don’t beat yourself up.
God doesn’t keep score.
He isn’t waiting for you to “catch up.”
He’s simply inviting you to come near—again.

If you want a gentle starting point.
If you’re in a season where time feels limited, starting small is often the most sustainable option.
Short devotionals, Scripture-based prayer guides, or simple journaling prompts can provide structure without pressure and help you reconnect with God in meaningful ways.
If you take one thing with you.
Don’t look back at the days you’ve missed.
Start today — not by trying to do more, but by simply turning your heart toward Him again.
God isn’t measuring your consistency. He isn’t keeping score. And He isn’t disappointed in you.
He meets you in busy days, imperfect rhythms, and tired seasons. And even the smallest moments of choosing Him matter more than you know.
That’s where grace lives.
