As I was thinking about topics for this coupon etiquette series, I interviewed a few of my favorite cashiers at the local stores that I shop at. Today’s topic is one that they shared with me. Let me just say that they were very adamant that I include this topic.
You’ve made your list and you’re headed to the store only to find out that they close in 15 minutes. Do you have time to grab all of your deals, sort out your coupons and make it back to the car in 15 minutes? Unless you’re a speed shopper and there’s no one else in the store, you probably don’t.
Now, I must admit that I have run into a store a few minutes before closing to try to score a deal. Let me just say that I won’t be doing that again. I frantically ran around the store picking up my items and then I heard it over the speaker, “Thank you for shopping with us. The store will be closing in five minutes. Please make your final selections and head to the checkout.” Needless to say, I only got a few of my items because I didn’t want to be the last one out of the store.
Keep in mind that the store employees have a life and want to get home to their families just like the rest of us do after a long, hard day. The last thing they want to see a few minutes before closing is a buggy full of deals and a million coupons to boot. Please allow yourself enough time if you’re shopping right before the store closes. And, please be courteous of the employees’ time and don’t make them stay after store hours.
Trust me, the cashiers will remember you and I’m not quite sure that you’ll be their favorite customer the next time you walk in the door 15 minutes before closing time.

Girl, I love you for posting this. :) I still dread when the woman who made us stay 35 minutes after closing one night because she couldn't find the right toothbrush for her deal she wanted. :) I miss seeing you. :)
